View of the Womb Natural Ultrasound Illustration

View of the Womb Illustration offers mothers the opportunity to become more in-tune with learning the position of their baby throughout pregnancy with an enchanting drawing as a sort of "Natural Ultrasound" (as coined by Naoli Vinaver).  By palpating, measuring, and listening to fetal heart rate and placenta sounds through a fetoscope, your baby's position will be located and artistically depicted on your abdomen.  Older siblings, partners, friends, or family can all join in illuminizing for a joy-filled bonding experience, if desired.

While babies are moving often within the uterus, you will learn how to interpret these movements so you can positively influence the position of your baby for a joyful birth.

View of the Womb Natural Ultrasound Illustration Includes:

  • Alignment Assessment
  • Abdominal Palpation
  • Fundal Height Measurement
  • Fetal Heart Tone Location (with fetoscope)
  • Belly Mapping Education
  • View of the Womb Illustration

Along with my four-year design degree from an art college, I have been palpating babies and bellies regularly since 2018 helping mothers to learn how their daily choices influence their baby's position and guiding decisions for Happier Healthier Birth.

View of the womb is ideal after 24 weeks when baby is most easily palpated and fetal heart tones can usually be heard by fetoscope.  However, VoW can be shared anytime throughout the childbearing years in a conceptualized way for pre-conception to envision the child to come, prior to 24 weeks to help visualize your growing baby, or during or after a miscarriage of any gestation to support through healing.

How View of the Womb Works

Scheduling & Prep

I will, typically, need at least two weeks to prepare material for a View of the Womb Session.  We will need approximately 1 hour for the session and you'll want to wear clothes that you are comfortable remaining in for some time and that might get makeup on during or after the session.  Thin and stretchy clothes are ideal.

I make every effort to use naturally-derived makeup for these sessions.  Some of these I make myself with my own herbal oils and earth pigments.  If you have sensitive skin or a preference for the materials being used.  Please contact me to discuss what cosmetic items I will need, and $5 will be deducted from the total.

Due to the nature of my on-call schedule, there are times where I may have to reschedule sessions, and possible stop in the middle of a session to serve a laboring mother.  Refunds will be provided for any session that cannot be rescheduled.  For these reasons, I encourage mothers to schedule closer to their 30 week date so they have some flexibility with rescheduling.

Herbal & Wellness Counseling

Herbal and wellness counseling helps to provide you with an alternative perspective to holistic wellness.  Wellness counseling can coincide with any traditional form of health therapy.  Herbal therapies, in most cases, also blend well with any traditional form of health therapy.  From perinatal depression to nutrition counseling and fun Make & Take herbal craft parties, Herbal & Wellness Counseling will help you and your family move towards a more autonomous lifestyle.  Herbal education is available for all ages.  The style of counseling I provide is to empower clients with knowledge and skill so that they can begin to confidently use natural therapies and resources that have been a part of communities for countless generations.  This knowledge belongs with the community.

Herbal & Wellness Counseling Options:

  • Herbal Make & Take Parties
  • Herbal Education
  • Herbal Counseling
  • Wellness Counseling
  • Nutrition Counseling
  • Tea Blending
  • Salve & Balms
  • Herbal Infusions

I have been leading community herbal classes since 2013, and studying herbs since 2011.  As I become more immersed with educating clients and the community on herbal wellness, I decided to complete a more formal course in herbal healing.  I completed my herbalist training through Rosemary Gladstar's The Science & Art of Herbalism course in January of 2017.  In addition to immersing our homeschool community in herbal knowledge, I finished an all-age Herbal Curriculum in 2018 and continue to contribute to the community-supported herbal magazine, The Essential Herbal.

As someone that has dabbled in natural therapies since my teen years, I have a love for wild foods, wild crafting, nature walks, and a respect for what God has given us on this beautiful earth to support our body's natural ability to heal and thrive.

How Herbal & Wellness Counseling Works

Client Intake

Prior to scheduling a session, you will need a minimum of one week (2-4 is ideal) to create a detailed lifestyle journal that will allow me to get a better understanding of your current routines.  It is important that you don't change anything about your foods and routines during this time so that we will have an accurate representation of things that may be influencing your current health.  You will also complete the detailed Client Intake form so that I may have time to review this prior to meeting which allows us to spend more time on specific needs during the session.

Lifestyle Journal (everything should be as specific as possible):

  • Sleep habits, times, lengths, dreams
  • Food habits, times, amount, type
  • Drinking habits, times, amounts, type
  • Movement habits, times, amounts, type (include both exercise and daily movement habits)
  • Sunlight, times, amount
  • Amount of screen usage, times, amount
  • Relaxation & Self-Care, times, amount, type

Insurance Reimbursement

My doula services, including antenatal doula mentoring, labor doula, and postpartum doula care may be reimbursable by your insurance company. Fees are required to be paid in full and you must submit your own claims; however, I will provide my NPI number and supporting information to help you with your claim submission. In many cases, a well-written letter explaining how you believe doula support reduced costs for your birth, as well as persistence, will provide you with a reimbursement. Please contact for any questions.

Perinatal education and doula support is a holistic investment for you, your baby, and your family.  Studies show doula-attended births result in more spontaneous births, lower intervention rates, better breastfeeding rates, and happier families both from education received, awareness of options, and continuous care from a trusted ally.  Your birth will change your life whether you plan for that or not.  Education and adequate support can be an immense preventative measure for the health and happiness of you, your baby, and your family's future whether that's by improving your birth experience and/or improving your ability to enjoy and understand your birth experience.  Many insurance companies will reimburse for doula services and you're encouraged to submit a claim.  Though I do not submit claims, I do have an NPI number and provide submission information for clients.

My approach to breastfeeding is gently watching mom and baby learn about each other, and offering gentle guidance and teaching moms and their support team on what to look for to know that baby is swallowing milk, as well as learn about the breastfeeding relationship so breastfeeding becomes more normalized.  These services are offered through my free monthly breastfeeding clinic, as well as through messaging, phone, and in-home (or at your birth facility).  Yes, I DO offer breastfeeding services "after hours" and on weekends!  Babies don't stop nursing for schedules, and that means moms need support for all phases!

How to Plan for Your Breastfeeding Visit

Home Visit

  • Complete the Esali Birth Breastfeeding Client Intake Form at least 24 hours prior to our visit so I can have time to review this prior to meeting you and we can spend most of our time focusing on the immediate needs of breastfeeding.
  • You are NOT entertaining me.  Please do NOT clean your house.  This time is to be focused on your rest and getting breastfeeding established.  I regularly attend pregnant women, provide midwifery assistance at home, and visit a postpartum home within days and weeks of a birth.  I also work from home and homeschool.  I 100% expect your house to look like you live in it, and to look like you are focusing on your newborn.  I also do not need anything to eat or drink, but a glass of water now and then is enjoyable.
  • Try to keep baby relatively hungry before a visit.  If baby is showing hunger cues, nurse for just a few minutes or feed a small portion of expressed milk if baby is not at the breast.  We don't want an upset baby, but we need to be able to assess the feeding on our visit.
  • Try to have baby relatively rested before our visit to help achieve a calm baby and a baby that breastfeeds fully before falling asleep.
  • Have a support person available, if possible, to help with other children or pets so you can focus on receiving support and get breastfeeding well-established or back on track.
  • The best place for us to visit is in the place where you normally nurse your baby.  You may also like access to your bed or other comfortable location if you are having difficult nursing in the place you would desire to nurse.
  • Full payment is expected at the time of service.  I accept cash, check, or credit card.

Live Web Visit (Skype/Facebook)

  • Complete the Esali Birth Breastfeeding Client Intake Form at least 24 hours prior to our visit so I can have time to review this prior to meeting you and we can spend most of our time focusing on the immediate needs of breastfeeding.
  • You will need an internet connection and a working web cam or phone with camera.  If this is a Skype visit, please have Skype installed and connect with my according to the instructions from our discussions.
  • Have baby rested and hungry just as with a home visit.
  • Have a support person to care for your other children just as with a home visit.
  • Dad/Partner or another support person is helpful to maneuver the camera around during a visit, but this is not required.
  • Have your hands washed to be ready to assess your baby's mouth for oral restrictions.
  • Full payment is expected the same day of service.  You will be invoiced through PayPal when making your appointment and you can complete your payment after our visit by PayPal or Credit Card.

Birth Mentor as a Pregnancy Resource

Birth Classes for #ALLtheBirths

Not your typical What to Expect class - I don't teach you how to be a good patient.  I don't just cover unmedicated vaginal birth or just medical birth.  My passion is preparing you and your support system for biological birth, which includes everything from unassisted birth at home to fully medicated and emergency unexpected experiences.  I nurture you into a confident consumer excited for pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and parenting - no matter where you choose to birth or where your birth journey takes you.  Take back your birth, improve your health, and get ready to take the first step into an empowered parenting experience.

Perinatal mentoring provides a mother and her support team with educational and counseling support during pregnancy and prior to conception.  It is never too early (or late) to start birth classes, join a birth series, or schedule a chat and counseling session.  The sooner you start learning about the birth industry and birth physiology, the more time you have to make changes if desired to wellness, care provider and birth location.  The more time you have to learn about the normalcy of birth, the more confident you will feel as you reach the end of your pregnancy.

Perinatal mentoring is available locally in and around the Mid-Ohio Valley as well as through scheduled online classes with me in any time zone compatible to EST, as well as through self-paced online birth classes anywhere in the world.  I have locations I can hold classes or we can meet in your home.  We can set time aside for a long walk while we chat or even while helping you with nesting and designing your nursery.  If you just wish you had someone to do walk this journey with you that also has extensive resources, knowledge and total understanding that this is an amazing, sometimes overwhelming, time of your life - let's connect!  I'd love to help you alleviate your fears and work towards your happy healthy birth.

Standard 10-Session Series

Providing antenatal doula support in the form of information and mentor sharing to reduce birth fear, increase body mobility, and provide choice options is a significant focus of my services.  This doula service provides 20 hours of support online and/or at a location of your choice (within 30 minutes of my home) or at one of my standard class locations.  This is a complete 10-session Esali Birth series with everything from healthy pregnancy and tests to labor, birth, breastfeeding and postpartum covering everything from completely unmedicated and unassisted birth (by choice or unplanned) to changes, birth guides, medical and emergency birth.  The self-paced Esali Birth Online Class is included with this option making review easy, or sharing with a birth team member overseas or a conflicting work schedule.  This also provides us with the opportunity to use in-person time for answering any questions that come up and not worrying about missing any important details.  Mid-Ohio Valley local clients receive access to my lending resource library.  See below for outline or contact for a private custom series.

  • $300 Private Sessions
  • Sliding Scale for Group Sessions depending on group amount

6 Session Series

This option is the same as a standard 10-session series with a few topics removed and a few combined.  The self-paced complete Esali Birth Online Class is included with this option which makes the few topics that are removed easily filled-in with self-paced web learning.  Mid-Ohio Valley clients receive access to my lending resource library.  See below for outline, or contact for a private custom series.

  • $200 Private Sessions
  • Sliding Scale for Group Sessions depending on group amount

3 Session Series

This option is great as a refresher birth class or if time is limited.  The Esali Birth Online Labor and Birth Overview course is included with this option as a great self-paced birth refresher course thoroughly covering the end of pregnancy, labor, birth, birth partner tips, and postpartum. Mid-Ohio Valley clients receive access to my lending resource library.  See below for outline, or contact for a private custom series.

  • $100 Private Sessions
  • Sliding Scale for Group Sessions depending on group amount

Mentoring & Single Sessions

1-hour single session mentoring allows you to custom cater classes to your personal needs in multiple sessions or just one session.  Mentoring sessions are great for pre-conception, prenatal, herbal counseling, and postpartum mentoring and are catered to you specifically to answer all your questions, alleviate your concerns, and offer educational guidance for options available.  This option also allows you to pick and choose topics to cover for a custom pre-conception or birth series.

  • $30 Private Session

All classes focus on Health AND Happiness and are catered to both Mom AND her birth partner/team.  It is ALL about navigating the birth industry, reducing fear, gaining knowledge, creating health and wellness, and doula 101 - a completely holistic and wholesome format.

Pregnancy Blessingway Host

Blessingways honor and support a mother through one of the most empowering experiences of her life.  Unlike a babyshower, a blessingway focuses on the mother to provider her with positive energy and a circle of support during the perinatal stages.

The goal of a blessingway is to create an empowering and positive energy within your support circle prior to your birth.  Blessingways are different for each mother and the blessingway should be a very personal experience.  It doesn't have to follow any set of standards and can even be blended with a traditional baby shower.  This add-on option to doula care is an excellent way of building our relationship for increased trust in birth.

Blessingway Facilitating Includes:

  • Support through coordinating the location and sending invitations
  • Developing a blessingway plan
  • Leading the energy and schedule during the blessingway
  • Relaxing manicure and pedicure with a hand and foot massage to relieve tension and allow time to connect and build trust before birth or to support you during your postpartum weeks.

Prices start at $200

belly binding wrap

Postpartum Belly Binding

Bellybinding helps to comfortably position your uterus, and supporting tissue, through involution (the uterus going back to it's pre-pregnancy size) after the birth of your baby.  Traditional Malaysian style Bengkung Belly Binding (which is different than using a corset) supports from the ribs, over the abdomen, and to the pelvic girdle, for full support in a flexible way that allows your muscles to regain their strength and your lungs to expand for full breathing.

Postpartum Belly Binding provides you with:

  • Abdominal Support
  • Organ Guidance
  • Decrease chance for diastasis recti
  • Confidence and strength when maneuvering after birth

Basic Belly Binding

$350

  • Custom-made muslin bengkung style belly wrap
  • 1 Postpartum visit (beginning within the first three days postpartum, and completing within the first week postpartum - must be discharged from the hospital before this can begin):
    • Light touch abdominal massage
    • Belly wrap and demonstration to your partner to continue wrapping for the first week postpartum
  • No herbs are included in this package

Full Belly Binding

$500

  • Custom-made muslin bengkung style belly wrap
  • 3 Postpartum visits (beginning within the first three days postpartum, and completing within the first week postpartum - must be discharged from the hospital before this can begin):
    • Light touch abdominal massage
    • Belly wrap and demonstration to your partner to continue wrapping between visits, and after the first week postpartum
  • Healing herbal blend for an abdominal poultice (enough for 5 days postpartum)

How Belly Binding Works

How do I schedule postpartum belly binding?

I will need to be notified of your desire for belly binding a minimum of 4 weeks prior to your baby's estimated birth date.  Sooner is better as I can only accept a certain number of clients per month.  This provides me with time to create the custom wrap, and order any herbal blends from quality sources, as well as place you tentatively on my schedule.  I require a $100 non-refundable down payment.

How do we setup the date to begin postpartum belly binding?

I prefer to be notified at least two days prior to beginning this service so I can fit you into my schedule as quickly as possible after your birth.  If you can give me a heads up when you're in labor, that is valuable.  Calling is preferable to messaging.

If you birth at home, this treatment can begin as early as the first 1-2 days after the birth if you are a current labor doula or birth assistant client.  It is preferable to begin after the first 24 hours.

If you birth in a facility, you must be discharged from the facility.  Due to the nature of hospital policies and routines within the first few days after birth, I am not comfortable providing this service until families have arrived home.  This is usually day 3, including labor doula clients.

What measurements do you need to make the custom wrap?

In order to provide you with the best support postpartum, these wraps are custom made to your measurements.  These measurements are best taken with some baby weight on you, as the wraps are used during the postpartum period when you are not yet a pre-pregnancy size.  There is not a specific time to take your measurements, this estimate just allows me to get within a size range.  (Dress or pants size does not help, because everyone's torso is a different length and we all gain various amounts with each pregnancy).

E-mail the following measurements with your name and your baby's estimated birth date to mdbergum@esalibirth.com with Postpartum Belly Binding Measurements in the subject line:

Height - Measure the distance between the underside of your breast, to the widest part of your hips

Waist: Measure the circumference of the widest area of your waist

Insurance Reimbursement

My doula services, including antenatal doula mentoring, labor doula, and postpartum doula care may be reimbursable by your insurance company.  Fees are required to be paid in full and you must submit your own claims; however, I will provide my NPI number and supporting information to help you with your claim submission.  In many cases, a well-written letter explaining how you believe doula support reduced costs for your birth, as well as persistence, will provide you with a reimbursement.  Please contact for any questions.

Financial Arrangements
A deposit is required upon signing an agreement to secure your birth time in my schedule.  Payments are then made according to the schedule outlined in our agreement.  Gift Certificates are available and doula support is an excellent item to add to your gift registry.

Placenta Preparation

Placenta preparation provides you with a variety of options for processing your placenta for short and long-term use including placenta encapsulation, placenta smoothies, placenta tinctures and more.

Consuming your placenta provides you with:

  • Adrenaline
  • Oxytocin
  • Progesterone
  • Iron
  • Protein
  • Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone

For many mothers, placenta consumption helps:

  • Prevent Postpartum Depression
  • Remedy Postpartum Depression
  • Increase Milk Supply
  • Increase Energy Levels

Placenta Preparation includes taking your placenta home after doula care, or coming to your house within the first week after birth for processing and basic postpartum care.  For most preparation, the placenta is tinctured or powdered for encapsulation (using traditional, steaming, methods).

Due to the high amounts of adrenaline in the placenta, and many options to improve milk supply and prevent/remedy postpartum depression, all mothers interested in placentophagy should read THIS POST that covers the known pros and cons of placenta consumption as well as how to process your own placenta to help you best decide if this service is right for you.

How Placenta Preparation Works

How do I get the placenta to you?

If you are a labor doula client, I will take your placenta home with me after your birth (if in a hospital) or begin processing immediately (for home birth).   I will make you a raw placenta smoothie immediately, depending on your birth location.

If you are not a labor doula client, you will take 2 zipper gallon sized bags + a small cooler with ice packs with you to your birth.  You will place your placenta (with the cord) in one of the gallon bags, seal that up, and then place that inside the other gallon bag and seal that up.  Place that in the cooler and have someone take this home to their refrigerator immediately.  (Many birth locations will also store your placenta in their refrigerator until you go home, just ask).  You will call me sometime after your birth to schedule time for processing.  (A heads up during labor is helpful, but not necessary).

How is the placenta processed?

For most processing, this is done in your home, though I provide all the equipment and ingredients.  The placenta, membranes, and cord are rinsed under cool water.  We make a print (on water color paper) with the placenta and the cord as a "Tree of Life" keepsake.  The cord is cut and shaped for dehydrating as a keepsake as well.

For tincturing, the placenta is diced and placed into glass jars and covered with brandy (or liquor of your choice - 80-100 proof).  Herbs can be added at this time.  This can remain with you and in two weeks you can start consuming.  Typically, however, I bring the jars home with me to complete the two week processing, strain, and bottle into dropper bottles then shipped back to you.

For powdering, the placenta is sliced (then typically steamed), and then dehydrated over the next 24 hours.  I then come back the following day and the dehydrated placenta is powdered to sprinkle in yogurt or make in to truffles or energy balls or can be encapsulated which is completed at that time.  If salves are to be made, some of the powder will come home with me to finish the salves and then shipped back to you when complete which can take 1-2 weeks.
